Burglary advice following reports across North Kent

Kent Police is reminding residents of some crime prevention advice that can help them avoid becoming a victim of burglary.

Officers on the North Division, which covers Medway, Swale, Gravesham and Dartford, are investigating a number of reports that have been received over the weekend.

Reports have been received from areas including Newington, Chatham, Rochester and Gravesend. Items taken include electrical devices, items of jewellery and cash.

Enquiries into these reports remain ongoing.

Detective Inspector Lopa McDermott said: ‘In some of the reports we’ve received burglars appear to have entered through a backdoor that had been left open or unlocked – possibly due to the weather getting warmer. Unfortunately, this does create opportunities for opportunistic offenders.

‘I’d like to reassure residents that the circumstances behind each burglary report we receive is investigated however, it is always better to prevent offending where we can.

‘There are simple steps that all members of the public can take to help deter thieves. This includes:

• Locking back doors and windows before answering the front door – thieves are known to work in pairs, one distracting residents at their front doors while the other tries the back.
• Ensuring valuables cannot be seen from the outside
• Making sure sheds, garages and other outbuildings are locked to ensure criminals cannot gain access to tools which would help them break into your home.
• Ensuring gates are also kept locked and that bins and other items cannot be used to help burglars climb over your fence.
• Considering installing alarms, security lights or CCTV cameras to deter thieves from targeting your home.
• Remembering to note down model and serial numbers of expensive items to ensure any stolen items which are recovered can be returned. You can also register items for free at www.immobilise.com.
• Keep receipts separate so thieves cannot return any stolen items to the shop for a refund.’
