£2m Leisure centre investment

Written by on 22 May 2018

£2m Leisure centre investment to be discussed for Swale.

Local leisure centres will be getting a £2 million makeover if councillors agree improvement plans next week.

The council’s cabinet is being asked to give the green light to invest in improvements and repairs to Sheppey Healthy Living Centre, Sheppey Pool and Swallows Leisure Centre.

Alongside the investment, the contract with Swale Community Leisure (SCL) – the trust that manages the leisure centres, supported by Serco – could be extended by 5.5 years.

Cllr Sarah Aldridge, cabinet member for health and well being at the council, said: “Our leisure centres are already popular with residents and visitors –
we had almost 600,000 visits in 2016 alone.

“We want to increase their use even more, by investing in some essential repairs, and providing new facilities and equipment.

“The council is committed to promote and encourage residents of all ages and abilities to become more active with the many health benefits recognised with a more active lifestyle.

“This will not only benefit existing users, but help attract new members who weren’t able to access these types of facilities previously.”

The improvements planned include:

Swallows Leisure centre:

* New family fun zone, with enhanced soft play
* Clip and climb/augmented climbing wall
* Expanded gym, with 10 new stations on new mezzanine floor over café
* Virtual spin studio, with healthy lifestyle toning suite for
mobility/postoperative managed exercise

Sheppey Pool and Sheppey Healthy Living Centre:

* New healthy lifestyle toning suite
* Virtual spinning studio
* Extended gym with equipment upgrades and approximately 12 new
stations

If approved, work is expected to begin by the end of the year. This would include some closures during the works, which users would be made aware of in advance.

The report on the proposals will be discussed at cabinet on Wednesday 30th June.

So again we get the bum deal. Our pool needs massive improvements as it’s dated and there isn’t anything for the children. We also need a decent family zone because again there isn’t anything. To be honest swallows doesn’t need anything where’s we don’t get what we actually need.

Love the fact that Sittingbourne seemingly gets a bigger expansion .. something slightly wrong there. Should surely be equal ?!
