Apprentice scheme re-opens

Written by on 19 August 2018

Swale Borough Council wants to help develop the next generation of workers with the latest round of its apprentice scheme.

The programme gives local people the chance to start their careers within different council services, and includes roles in housing, democratic services, property and economy and community services.

The council’s apprenticeship program has been running for seven years and has given local people the opportunity to grow, develop skills, and
improve confidence.

Apprenticeships not only benefit those taking part but also council officers and departments where they work, by bringing enthusiasm, insights and new points of view.

Cllr Mike Cosgrove, cabinet member for regeneration at the council, said: “Apprenticeships offer local people the chance to receive recognised
qualifications, whilst getting the hands on experience that is vital to them as they begin their careers.

“We’ve been very fortunate to have a number of excellent apprentices over the years. Several of these have taken up full time positions here after they have successfully completed their apprenticeships, with others moving onto further education, training or full time work.”

Rhianna Gardner, who completed her apprenticeship with the council and now works as health and housing coordinator, said:

“I love working here! I’ve learnt so much and I’m grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given to develop in an area of work that I’ve always been interested in.

“The apprenticeship gave me a good insight into what being at work is actually like, as I came here straight from sixth form and had little
experience working in an office.

“I was given time and support from my managers to complete coursework whilst I worked and soon gained my qualification.

“The apprenticeship then enabled me to secure a contract within the housing team, and I’m now in a job that I really enjoy and contribute to
helping the local community.”
