BRFM marks 11 years on air across Sheppey & Swale
On 30th October 2006 BRFM officially switched the switch to begin broadcasting to the Isle of Sheppey & Swale from it’s studios in Minster. 11 years later BRFM continues to broadcast a service to its listeners, providing News, Weather & Travel around the clock supplied by its strong volunteering team.
At 8am on 30th October 2006 BRFM began broadcasting after 2 weeks of testing and 6 years of waiting, Ofcom granted BRFM a community radio licence, which would finally see the Isle of Sheppey & Swale community have its on radio station, something that other county based radio stations were not covering.
Take a listen to BRFM’s official launch from 2006.
Since 2006 BRFM has supported many local charities, organisations and given the Isle of Sheppey a voice. The radio stations Roadshow can been seen regularly across the community supporting local events, presenters are often around the community interviewing local people, societies, charities and organisations. Over the past 11 years BRFM has taken its service to local schools to train pupils about community radio, which has given school pupils the opportunity to have a show “Live” on air to showcase the skills they have learnt. Behind the scenes of the radio station, volunteers are tirelessly training more volunteers about the station, how to present a show, how to script a news bulletin and much more. Each month BRFM opens its doors to local MP Gordon Henderson, who allows listeners to phone, e-mail or text in with vital questions/advice for the MP to help with. Gordon Henderson has been a regular visitor to BRFM since 2012 for his “Advice Surgery”
BRFM are always looking for new members to join its thriving team, both behind the microphone in the studio presenting shows or in the back scenes helping with advertising, promotions and events. If you have some spare time each week to join BRFM, e-mail your interest to: [email protected]
Since 2006 BRFM has seen many members through its doors which have gone onto more inspiring careers in radio, such as BBC Radio Kent & BBC Radio 5 and the BBC World Service.
During today BRFM has received gifts and well wishes from it’s listeners, and we would like to say thank you for your continued support over another successful 12 months.
Happy Birthday BRFM, and here’s to another year of “Truly Local Radio for Swale”
