Help for Taxi Drivers to Prevent Physical and Verbal Abuse

Written by on 7 January 2019

Swale Borough Council are supporting a scheme from the National Private Hire Taxi Association to increase awareness about the physical and verbal abuse suffered by taxi drivers.

It follows news that two men were jailed after setting a taxi alight after a night out in Canterbury in December, while the driver was still inside. Several incidents have also been reported in the Borough of Swale.

The council is offering a “no excuse for abuse” sticker to every driver, and urging passengers to treat drivers with respect.

Cllr Cameron Beart, deputy cabinet member responsible for licensing at Swale Borough Council said:

“Taxi drivers are an essential method of transportation within our area, and it’s vital they should be protected. Any abuse, be it physical, racial or verbal will not be tolerated and should be reported to the police. We encourage drivers to come forward.”

To claim your free sticker, please email the licensing team taxis@swale.gov.uk. Any abuse should be reported to the authorities immediately.
