Locals Raise Funds for the Sheerness RNLI Lifeboats

A cyclist and a group of runners have raised money for the Sheerness RNLI Lifeboats.

52-year-old Paul Strudwick from Sheerness, father of crew member Jason, took part in the London to Brighton bike ride on 1 July 2019 and for his efforts raised the brilliant sum of £280 for the local lifeboats.

Paul said: ‘as it was my first-time taking part in the event, I was hoping to complete the course in about 4.5 hours. Unfortunately, with very strong South Westerly winds and driving rain it was not to be and I eventually finished in 5.25 hours which was not too bad considering 3 hours of that was in the rain, roll on next year !!’

Debbie Hodgson and members of local running club ‘Beginners to Runners’ raised the excellent sum of £151 by saving up their 5p coins in the RNLI ‘Bettys 5p Pots’.

The runners called into the Admirals Arm in Queenborough for some ‘refreshment’ and whilst there handed over the cash to lifeboat crew member and Landlady at the very popular micro pub Rachel Collier.

Betty’s 5p Pots Appeal allows the public to help the RNLI save lives at sea by raising money through saving 5p coins in small jam jars

The idea for Betty’s 5p Pots came from Betty Frith, who was the Honorary Treasurer for over 20 years at the Hertford branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).
Sadly she is no longer with us but the Hertford Branch started adopting the idea in May 2014 and raised £450 in 5p coins that year. In 2015 they raised over £2,500.

The scheme is now rolled out nationally and is raising fantastic amounts of money for the charity that ‘Saves Lives at Sea’.
