Name the new public square

Written by on 9 May 2018

Swale residents encouraged to submit ideas for new name.

Residents of Swale are being encouraged to get involved with the regeneration project in Sittingbourne by helping to name a new public square which will be created by the Spirit of Sittingbourne project, which will see a new retail park, multi-storey car park and leisure complex built in the town.

The new square will link the new leisure complex to the Sittingbourne train station. The leisure complex will include an 8 screen cinema and 6 new restaurants. Currently the square is being referred to as “Spring Square” in a planning application, but this may now not be the final choice of names. Cllr Mike Cosgrove, cabinet member for regeneration at Swale Borough Council said “We had a great response to the vote to name the new Princes Street retail park, which showed that residents of the borough are excited about the regeneration, and we want to get them involved as much as possible”

“Squarey McSquareface”

“I’m sure we will get a few suggestions along the lines of “Squarey McSquareface” but we’ll hopefully also get some creative and interesting ideas for people to vote on”

Ideas for names of the new public square should be sent to: spirit@swale.gov.uk, or submitted on Facebook & Twitter, by 5pm on Friday 18th May. A shortlist will then be drawn up for which residents can vote on, which will be announced at the full council meeting on Wednesday 13th June 2018.

Over recent weeks the first phase of works for Sittingbourne regeneration has begun with a temporary entrance to the Forum Shopping Centre car park in use, the temporary entrance will be in place while works are carried out to improve drainage and to resurface the area. The Spirit of Sittingbourne team confirmed works are on track and a reconfigured car park will re-open on 16th July 2018.

Road works are also continuing on St Michaels Road this week, seeing traffic being slightly diverted off the main road onto the road running alongside the Forum and rejoining opposite the train station.
