Poppy Garden & Remembrance services in Swale

Written by on 8 November 2017

Sheppey Gateway Poppy Garden

Having received thousands of knitted and crocheted poppies, Swale Borough Council’s poppy appeal will culminate in the launch of a poppy garden display at Sheppey Gateway this Friday.

Swale council worked with the Royal British Legion, Sheppey Matters and Gateways across Kent, as well as local libraries and community groups, to create a garden of knitted and crocheted poppies at Sheppey Gateway.

Contributions came from generous crafters across the borough, with further donations coming from as far afield as Portsmouth and Poland. In total, more than 3,000 poppies were donated.

The display itself has been assembled by local volunteers, and will be officially opened by the Mayor of Swale, Cllr Colin Prescott, at 11am on Friday 10 November. All are welcome to come to Sheppey Gateway for a morning of community remembrance.

Cllr Andrew Bowles, leader of the council, said: “The response to the appeal has been truly overwhelming. People have been so generous with their time and the end result is a beautiful community tribute to the fallen.

“We hope to build on this success next year and create an even more impressive piece to mark Remembrance Day 2018.”

The poppy garden will remain on display until Friday 24 November.

BRFM will be observing a 2 minute silence at 11am on Sunday LIVE from the Cenotaph in London.
