Roadworks in Sittingbourne delayed

Sittingbourne town centre roadworks delayed & need reviewing

A busy town centre road in Sittingbourne is to remain closed for an extra week. Roadworks on Milton Road has forced the closure since 24th July and were  expected to be lifted this week, but the “Spirit of Sittingbourne” project managers say there has been a delay.

A Statement released by the Spirit of Sittingbourne says: “Milton Road will remain closed for at least one more week than planned”

“This is due to the conditions of the road, the amount of plant underneath it and the requirement to have Network Rail representatives on site. The works will be completed before the new school term at the latest.”

Diversion Review

There are also plans to review and alter the diversion route around the town because of the Milton Road closure, as HGV’s struggle to navigate around the suggested diversion route.

A spirit of Sittingbourne spokesman has said: “Regular vehicles are able to take a left turn through the bus breakthrough onto the A2, but this will be improved to accommodate larger vehicles, such as HGVs, which currently travel down Station Street until they can safely turn onto their preferred route.”

Roadworks have also begun this week on West Street (outside The Golden Hope) through to the High Street (outside Wilko), which will see the section of road become 2 way temporary to help ease traffic around St. Michael’s road as the planned roadworks develop over the coming months.

The project team say the first phase of roadworks is due to be completed by 20th November 2017.
