Tackling blaze through the night

Written by on 8 August 2018

Firefighters continue to battle blaze.

Kent Fire & Rescue teams are still at the scene of a Barn fire this morning after a blaze broke out last night (Tuesday 7th August) in Stockbury, near Sittingbourne.

Firefighters have asked people living near to The Street in Stockbury, to keep doors and windows closed due to smoke.

Teams were called in the early hours to an open sided Dutch barn containing bailed hay that was well alight.

Firefighters worked through the night to tackle the fire and prevent fire spreading to nearby buildings.

Scaled down teams are still there damping down the flames this morning.

The fire comes just days after the large Field Fire in Sittingbourne, which see homeowners flee their homes after flames spread quickly across the dry ground destroying approx 35 acres of wheat.

Fires have also occurred across Sheppey over the past week, due to the high temperatures and dry tinder.

Kent Fire & Rescue spokesman said “People need to take real care over barbecues & dispose of coals & ash and cigarettes responsibly during the summer. Shurbs, trees & grass are still very dry despite the downpour of rain yesterday evening (Tuesday)”
