Take the kids to burn off their excess energy this Christmas at three newly upgraded play areas on the Isle of Sheppey

Parents will be able to take the kids to one of three newly upgraded play areas on the island this Christmas thanks to a £73,000 investment from Swale Borough Council and Leysdown Parish Council.

Work has begun today at King George V playing field in Queenborough, Leysdown Coastal Park and The Spinney play area in Leysdown.

A brand new four tower play unit with a slide, balance bridge, fireman’s pole and rope climbing across multiple levels, will be installed in the King George V playing field to replace the old worn out climbing frame.

New train equipment with a customised ‘No 54’ train face, to represent the famous Terrier class tank engine that operated on the Sheppey Light Railway more than 100 years ago, will replace the current climbing frame at the toddler play area at The Spinney.

Aero skate equipment – which mimics the action of skating in a half pipe – will give budding young skaters a chance to practice their skills, and a 27-metre-long cable way will give users a thrill as they zip along at high speed at Leysdown Coastal Park.

A new fitness station with monkey, pull up and dip bars will also be installed, alongside a green basketball hoop and football goal frame with a freshly tarmacked playing surface.

The multi-layered cyclone climbing frame will also be relocated from The Spinney.

Martyn Cassell, head of commissioning, environment and leisure at the council, said:

“We’re happy to invest public money in green spaces and play areas where children and adults can get out in the fresh air, keep fit and enjoy themselves.
 
“We are committed to bringing better leisure facilities to residents on the island, and that’s why we’ve invested £40,000 into this upgrade, along with an additional £15,000 from Leysdown Parish Council. “
