“The Sea View has Me Again”
A talk by Professor Patrick Wright Professor of Literature and Visual & Material Culture Kings College London with readings by the Big Fish
Uwe Johnson – a German Literary Genius in Sheerness.
Who was this unexpected incomer and what was he doing in Sheerness? Was he hiding? Was he rich or poor? And how should one pronounce his name? Neighbours wondered about the already famous German writer who moved to Sheerness with his wife and daughter towards the end of 1974, and lived at 26 Marine Parade until his early death, aged 49, in 1984. This evening will use new translations by Damion Searls of Johnson’s Sheerness writings to show what he liked about the town in which he went about as ‘Charles’.
Performance 7.30pm, tickets £5
